For several decades, STRATON AUTOMATION has distinguished itself in the field of energy thanks to its robust and innovative solutions. By integrating IEC61850, IEC60870 (101 and 104) and DNP3 stacks, as well as the straton Runtime for use as PLC and RTU software, the company is a key player in the digitisation of the energy industry.
The straton Runtime: at the heart of energy solutions
- Case in point: Brodersen’s RTU32M, incorporating the straton Runtime, has been successfully deployed in an offshore wind farm producing 1400 MW in Denmark.
- Another use case: The straton Runtime acts as a virtual PLC in large-scale infrastructures, such as the new 100% digital command and control system for RTE (Europe’s largest electricity transmission network operator), due to come into service at the end of 2023 near Vannes (France).
STRATON AUTOMATION’s IEC61850 client and server stacks (supporting the MMS and GOOSE communication protocols) have been repeatedly certified and offer solutions for a wide range of applications.
Free tools to test and validate your IEC61850 systems
In 2025, STRATON AUTOMATION took a further step in sharing its expertise by making two IEC61850 simulation tools available free of charge. These tools enable professionals to test and validate their systems in real or virtualised environments.
- IEC61850 Client simulation tool
- Objective: To enable connection to any IED, regardless of its manufacturer.
- Main features:
- Subscribe to reports (URCB or BRCB)
Read values sent by IEDs and write to Control Values (ctlval) according to the Control Model (ctlmodel) set by the user, while complying with the IEC61850 standard.
- Ability to interact with several servers simultaneously.
- State machine integrated and developed with the various error logs (addcauses) and the various control models of the standard
- New: Without going through our editor, you can now download our tool in .exe format and use it to monitor and control IEC61850 devices.
- IEC61850 Client simulation tool
- Objective: Transform any Windows PC into a virtual IED.
- Main features:
- Simulate functions such as measurements (MMXU) or control the position of a circuit breaker (XCBR).
- Manage the ctlmodels defined by the IEC61850 standard:
- Operate
- Select Before Operate (SBO)
- Operate with enhanced security
- Select Before Operate with enhanced security (SBOw).
- Operate
- Publish Report Control Block in (URCB and BRCB) with different instances so that IEC61850 clients can subscribe.
- Fully simulate a virtual IED with a detailed IEC61850 model.
- New: A simple .exe simulation server (outside the straton editor) that allows you to test the correct operation of your IEC61850 clients configured with the straton stack or any other stack.
Simulation tool use cases
- IEC61850 Client Tool:
- Connect to IEC61850 Servers
- Subscribe to URCBs and BRCBs.
- Display RCB values.
- Send commands according to control models.
- IEC61850 Simulation Server Tool:
- Provide a read-only SCL file model.
- Test OEM partners’ IEC61850 clients by simulating a robust, standards-compliant server.
- View a read-only SCL model
- New: Facilitate the testing phase for your technicians within a practical framework of an IEC61850 model.
A user-friendly interface and universal compatibility
Entirely independent of manufacturers, these tools feature an intuitive, ergonomic graphical interface. They guarantee compatibility with any IEC61850-compliant device, enabling quick and easy integration into your energy ecosystems.
With these tools, STRATON AUTOMATION continues to put its expertise at the service of its customers, offering accessible, high-performance solutions tailored to the challenges of the energy industry.
