Oregon (USA) wood-products manufacturer employs a straton-powered low-cost, low-risk Smart Modernization solution from CTI to upgrade and bring new capabilities to its existing control system.
CTI’s new processors (JanusTM PAC) and co-processors (ACP1) utilize straton’s IEC61131-3 programming software to enable customers to modernize existing control systems with less cost, less risk and less effort. The extensive communications capabilities in straton allow CTI’s customers to integrate into their existing (and often aging) controls system a wide range of modern third-party products ranging from variable frequency drives to HMI and SCADA systems to machinery utilizing a wide variety of communications protocols. Instead of having to remove existing controls systems and throw away years or even decades of investment, customers can build on their existing investment to increase productivity, lower risk and improve security.
Recently, CTI helped a wood-products manufacturer in Oregon (USA) integrate new variable frequency drives and upgrade its existing control system using Ethernet/IP and CTI’s straton-powered 2500P-ACP1 application coprocessor.
Project Highlights:
- Collins Products in Klamath Falls, Oregon (USA) upgraded eleven Series 1336 Allen Bradley variable frequency drives that were 20+ years old with significantly newer Rockwell 755 drives
- The new drives were networked into the control system over EtherNet/IP using CTI’s 2500P-ACP1 as the master and CTI’s 2500-C300 CPU as the controller.
- Because of the Smart Modernization solution, Collins is able to monitor data, drive motors, drive temperatures and the health of the Ethernet/IP network
According to Neal Genge, Process Control Engineer for the Klamath Falls plant :
“We are very pleased with the ease of integration and performance of the CTI ACP1 with the PLC 2500-C300 processor that controls our E/IP network. This will be our “standard” control method when we network additional drives in our plant. We plan to add other “intelligent” E/IP devices to this design framework as they become available.”
“Control Technology Incorporated (CTI) originally selected the straton product as it has a wide range of features, extensive protocol support, and access to the runtime source code which simplifies debug and development. After eleven years of integrating straton into several products, CTI has been very satisfied with their willingness to tailor the straton product for important OEM needs, the innovative development staff and their top-notch technical support. CTI continues to value our partnership with STRATON AUTOMATION.“
